Kopinga Marae was opened in 2005
by the Prime Minister, Helen Clark.
(Above) The entranceway into the whare
Kopinga is the culmination of many years of planning, lobbying and
fundraising. The results are spectacular. The views are magnificent and
the aura about Kopinga is magical. School groups love staying at
Kopinga.
There is a
sense of peace and dignity about this marae.
The design is contemporary and
symbolises the hopo,
the
albatross with outspread wings, a bird sacred to Moriori. The design
also builds on the works of the ancestors. It captures the essence of
what we now know about the old people, their carvings, their culture and
their connection to the environment. |
