Culture and history of the Moriori of the Chatham Islands

Moriori of the Chatham Islands Culture and history

The Chatham Islands may be lacking a few things, but one thing that we do not lack is culture or history!

We have more authentic 'New Zealand' culture and history here on Rekohu, than anywhere else in the country.

Where else in the country can you be immersed in a history and culture this unique?

Moriori, Maori, and Chatham Islands' culture.

Moriori: The original inhabitants of these isles. Moriori have lived here for more than 700 years. Possibly since the time when Maori arrived in mainland New Zealand.  A central theme of Moriori culture is the covenant of peace. This covenant originated in the form of a declaration by the Moriori chief, Nunuku, who outlawed killing. The punishment for breaking this tenet was ostracism from the tribe. This covenant of peace has been adhered to faithfully by Moriori for hundreds of years, even in the face of unwarranted aggression.

Come and see Kopinga Marae: The only Moriori marae in the world.

Come and see the culture of these peaceful people.

Ngati Mutunga: A Maori tribe, originally from Taranaki, have been resident here for 172 years.

Pakeha have also resided here for more than 207 years
